Azade Kakavand is a Ph.D. candidate at the Computational Communication Science Lab of the University of Vienna, supervised by Prof. Annie Waldherr and Dr. Nicola Righetti. Her research focuses on the intersection of technological affordances, social media platforms, and far-right movements, utilizing network analysis and text-as-data methodologies.
Azade is actively involved in interdisciplinary research projects, including the Horizon 2020 initiative Youth Skills (ySKILLS), which examines skill-sharing networks among children and adolescents, and PolarVis: Visual Persuasion in a Transforming Europe, exploring the affective and polarizing impact of visual content in online political discourse. In 2021, she contributed to the report Political Advertisement and Coordinated Behavior on Social Media in the Lead-up to the 2021 German Federal Elections for the Media Authority of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Azade completed the Erasmus Mundus Master "Journalism, Media and Globalisation" with specialisation on Media and Politics at Aarhus University and the University of Amsterdam. For her master thesis she researched minority signification in German crime reporting. Additionally, she has worked as a research assistant at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research.
