Verena K. Brändle was a senior research fellow at the Computational Communication Science Lab. She received an International Postdoctoral Grant by the Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) and was a Visiting Fellow at the Migration Policy Center at the European Union Insititute in Florence.

Her research is located at the intersection of critical migration/border studies, political communication and migration governance. She is further interested in the role of the state in internet infrastructure regulation. 

Since 2020 she is principal investigator of the DFF-funded project “Informing to dissuade? Governments’ digital information campaigns for migrants as bordering practices” in which she analyses EU governments’ attempts to inform and influence migrants’ decision-making through online and social media. Emphasis is put on critically assessing these campaigns within the wider context of digital migration management which has enabled new ways to define and construct boundaries and shape European borderlands.

Prior to this, Verena was a postdoc in the research project “The Peoples’ Internet (PIN)” located at the University of Copenhagen and funded by the Carlsberg Foundation as well as held postdoctoral positions in the H2020 project TransSOL. 

She has obtained her PhD from the University of Copenhagen with the thesis "Contestation of citizenship 'from below': People's notions of justice about migration in the EU" in 2017.
