Community Detection as a Network Analytical Procedure 

The talk discusses how community detection as a network analytical procedure can be brought together with substantive social scientific concepts. In network analysis, communities are densely connected sets of nodes. In social scientific research, community detection is typically applied due to the supposition that these dense actor sets are connected by relevant properties (e.g., sociodemographic similarity, shared ideologies, or strategic cooperation). However, a diverse set of community detection procedures exists and often uncovers very different groups within the same network, making it important to ground methodological choices in theoretical considerations. The talk discusses this challenge and illustrates it on the basis of a civil society hyperlink network on the issue of food safety.

About the Guest

Since 2020, Daniela Stoltenberg, M.A. is a research associate at the Division Communication Theory and Media Effects in the Institute of Media and Communication at Freie Universität Berlin. From 2017-2020 she worked as a research associate at the division "Digitized Public Spheres" at the University of Münster supervised by Prof. Dr. Annie Waldherr. Her research focuses on digital public spheres & space, feminism, social justice, and computational methods.
