CCL at the Maker Faire Vienna

22.05.2017

We explained network analysis to visitors of the #MFV17 by showing them their own Twitter networks as well as political networks from media content.

"To address the growing societal and economic challenges, there is an increasing demand for universities to use their knowledge from research and teaching to fulfill their so-called "Third Mission" in society. This implies taking responsibility, actively and consciously, for the society on whose behalf they are working."

The Maker Faire Vienna 2017 had 9,200 visitors on the weekend 20th-21st May - many of them stopped at our booth and were taught the basics of networks analysis using their own Twitter networks based on an app team member Hyunjin Song had programmed for the occasion. Tech-savvy visitors even got an introduction into the R code that was used. Visitors who did not have a Twitter account were shown networks based on negative campaigning in media content during the 2013 Austrian election (data provided by AUTNES).

We were overwhelmed by the many visitors' positive feedback and their motivation to learn about these complex research methods.

We want to thank the Maker Faire 2017 for organizing the event and the visitors for having spend some of their weekend with us. Maybe we'll see each-other next year!
