In fall 2021, the project "Emotional Misinformation – The Interplay of Emotion and Misinformation Spreading on Social Media" (EMOMIS) will start in cooperation with the Complexity Science Hub (CSH) Vienna. Hannah Metzler (PI, CSH), David Garcia (Co-PI, CSH) and Annie Waldherr (Co-PI) are working with an interdisciplinary project team to investigate the interplay of emotion and misinformation spreading. The project is funded by the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF) for a period of three years.
About the project
The spreading of misinformation via social media contributes to a global threat to trust in science and democratic institutions, with consequences for public health and societal conflicts. Emotions influence how we process information, suggesting a link between certain emotional states and misinformation spreading – especially in times of high uncertainty. The project aims at understanding how emotions influence the tendency to believe and share inaccurate content, and to test intervention strategies to mitigate emotional misinformation spreading. Using digital data traces, the research team will analyze patterns of emotional misinformation spreading on social media and use experimental studies as well as computer simulations to test which emotion regulation strategies effectively contain its spread.

Hannah Metzler (PI, CSH), David Garcia (Co-PI, CSH) und Annie Waldherr (Co-PI) untersuchen mit einem interdisziplinären Projektteam das Zusammenspiel von Emotionen und der Verbreitung von Misinformation. Das Projekt wird vom Wiener Wissenschafts-, Forschungs- und Technologiefond (WWTF) für die Dauer von drei Jahren gefördert.
Über das Projekt
Die Verbreitung von Misinformationen in sozialen Medien bedroht das Vertrauen in demokratische Institutionen, aber auch in die Wissenschaft und hat daher relevante Auswirkungen auf soziale Konflikte und die öffentliche Gesundheit. Emotionen beeinflussen, wie wir Informationen aufnehmen und verarbeiten, weshalb ihnen eine kritische Rolle bei der Verbreitung von Misinformationen zukommt – insbesondere in Zeiten hoher Unsicherheit. Ziel des Projekts ist es herauszufinden, ob bestimmte Emotionen uns anfälliger dafür machen, Fehlinformationen zu glauben und sie zu verbreiten, und Interventionsstrategien zu testen, die dem entgegenwirken können. Anhand von digitalen Datenspuren analysiert das Forschungsteam, wie sich emotionale Fehlinformationen in sozialen Medien verbreiten, und testet in experimentellen Studien sowie mit Hilfe von Computersimulationen, welche Strategien zur Emotionsregulation ihre Verbreitung wirksam eindämmen können.

Für die Mitarbeit im Projekt wird ein*e Doktorand*in mit einem Studienabschluss in Kommunikationswissenschaft oder einer verwandten Sozialwissenschaft und nachgewiesenem Interesse an interdisziplinärer Zusammenarbeit mit Wissenschaftler*innen aus dem Bereich der Informatik/Data Science gesucht.
