Employment as Freelancer for field Interviews

The University of Vienna is looking for interviewers to work on the EU-funded 2020 project MIRROR. This project will focus on irregular migrants’ media use and their perceptions of Europe and will therefore conduct interviews with irregular migrants in different countries. The interviews will be conducted in person with participants in Vienna, and remote online with participants in Italy and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Data collection will be conducted in one of the following languages: Arabic, Dari/Pashto, French, English, or German. Interviewers will attend an interviewer training, conduct semi-structured interviews, and transcribe the collected material.

Job Description:

  • Attending a 5-day paid interviewer training session at the University of Vienna late July/early August 2020.
  • Travel to interview location in Vienna, 5-day period (August 2020), transport is paid for. Conducting semi-structured field interviews at the interview location.
  • Conducting remote online interviews with migrants (Autumn 2020).
  • Interview conduction includes: obtaining informed consent, recording of interviews.
  • Transcription of conducted interviews, manual check of translated interviews.
  • Technical equipment (for interview recording and transcription) is provided.
  • Salary (gross salary): paid interview training (275 euro), interview conduction (45 euro per interview), interview transcription (90 euro per interview), manual check of interview translation (40 euro per interview).

Position Requirements:

  • Be fully bilingual/fluent in (English or German) in one or ideally several of the following languages Arabic, Dari/Pashto, or French (read, write, and speak languages)
  • Highest diligence in handling sensitive data and willingness to sign a confidentiality agreement
  • Willingness to visit a reception centre in Vienna and conduct interviews with migrants of various countries of origin
  • Willingness to conduct remote online interview with migrants of various countries of origin who currently stay in reception centres in Italy or Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills
  • High level of computer literacy – particularly fast and accurate typing
  • Ability to work in teams
  • Possess excellent decision making, problem solving and organizational skills

Preferred Competencies (skills knowledge, and abilities):

  • Experience in conducting qualitative semi-structured interviews
  • Interest in social sciences and academic Research
